Why carpet goes grey in the first place
Three different things are happening, they look similar from a distance, and they do not respond to the same treatment. Knowing which one you have is most of the job.
Traffic lanes
The darker paths between doorways, where the pile has been walked flat and packed with grit. Caught early this lifts out completely. Left for years the grit cuts the fibre and dulls the way it reflects light, and that part is permanent.
Filtration soil
The grey lines along baseboards and under doors. Not spills — airborne soot and dust pulled through the carpet edge as air moves through the room. Common in any house with a fireplace or a wood stove, and it needs a different approach from a traffic lane.
Residue from the last cleaning
Detergent that was never rinsed out stays sticky and pulls soil back in, so the carpet re-soils faster than it did before. If your carpet looked good for two weeks and then worse than it started, this is why.
Oil and spill residue
Body oil, cooking oil and the sticky film left by store-bought spot removers all attract dry soil, which is why old treated spots reappear darker than the carpet around them.
What happens on the day
We walk the rooms with you first. That is when we point out anything we do not think will come out, so you hear it before the money is spent rather than after, and when you tell us which marks you actually care about — because there is usually one that matters more than the rest.
Then the work: pre-vacuum, pre-spray, agitation, the hot water extraction most people picture when they think of carpet cleaning, the acid rinse, and a final pass. Furniture, drying and access all vary by house.
Clear the floor of small items, toys and cables, and lift anything breakable off low shelves. We move the furniture that can reasonably be moved — sofas, chairs, coffee tables — and clean around beds with storage under them and anything genuinely heavy or fragile. Plan to keep off the carpet for a few hours.
What cleaning will not fix
Being straight about this is the whole reason people call a small firm twice. A cleaner who promises everything is telling you something about the conversation you will have afterwards.
Fibre that is already worn
Once grit has cut the twist out of the fibre, the carpet has lost the ability to reflect light evenly. It will come back clean. It will not come back new.
Bleach and chemical damage
Where colour has been stripped, there is no colour left to clean. That is a dye repair question, not a cleaning one.
Some old pet damage
Urine that has gone through to the pad and subfloor may need the pad replacing rather than the carpet cleaning. We will say which one you are looking at.
Delamination
When the backing separates from the carpet it ripples and will not lie flat again. Cleaning does not reattach it.
Rentals, offices and turnovers

Yes, and we have Auburn customers who have been with us for years. It is a straightforward run down the highway and we treat Placer County as part of our area rather than as an exception. What does the acid rinse actually do?

How often should carpet be cleaned?

How long does it take, and how long to dry?
A typical three-bedroom house is a half day. A single room is usually an hour or two including setting up and packing down. Carpet is walkable within a few hours and fully dry in about a day.
Do you move the furniture?
We move what can reasonably be moved: sofas, chairs, coffee tables. We ask you to clear the small things beforehand — lamps, electronics, cables, anything breakable on a low shelf. Very heavy or fragile pieces, and beds with storage underneath, we clean around rather than risk.
Do you cover Meadow Vista and Colfax?
Yes, both, and they are on the same run as Auburn for us. Colfax is the furthest point we go regularly, so if you are out that way it is worth grouping work together or booking a little further ahead.
Can you get old pet odor out, or do we need new carpet?
It depends entirely on how far it went. Urine that stayed in the pile usually comes out. Urine that soaked through to the pad and the subfloor is a different problem, and cleaning the carpet repeatedly will not solve it — the pad may need replacing. What if a spot comes back?
