Old houses are a different job
Nevada City is largely Victorian and near-Victorian housing, and that changes almost everything about a carpet cleaning. The carpet is more likely to be wool than nylon. The subfloor is more likely to be board than slab. There is often no straight run longer than a few feet, and the stairs are narrow, turned, and the single dirtiest thing in the house.
None of that is a problem if you have worked in these houses before. It is a problem if you turn up expecting the open floor plan of a newer build in a subdivision and find a staircase with a turn in it and a hundred-year-old landing.
Stairs, landings and wool
Stairs take more punishment per square foot than anything else in a house and they are the hardest thing to clean properly, because there is no flat run to work along. In an old house they are usually narrow and often turn on a winder, so each tread has to be worked individually.
Wool is the other thing. It is common in Nevada City and it behaves differently from the synthetic fibre in a newer carpet: more sensitive to heat, more sensitive to chemistry, and much more likely to show a mistake permanently. It is worth cleaning properly and it is worth saying on the phone.
How we clean it
Eight steps, from pre-spray through to a final vacuum, finishing with an acid rinse that leaves the fibre soft rather than crunchy. The rinse is the part most people notice afterwards, because carpet that has been cleaned without one holds detergent and starts attracting soil again almost immediately.
Inspection and walkthrough, pre-vacuum, moving what can be moved, pre-spray, agitation to break the soil loose, hot water extraction, the acid rinse, then grooming and a final pass. The rinse is the step that separates a cleaning that lasts from one that looks good for a fortnight.

Yes, and for most shops it is the only sensible option. Evenings and early mornings are normal for us. Arrange it when you book so the timing is agreed rather than worked out on the day.

Between tenants the carpet decides how the place shows. It is the cheapest thing in the building to improve.

Grey edges and wood smoke
A lot of Nevada City houses heat with wood, and wood smoke shows up in carpet in a particular way: fine grey lines along baseboards and under doorways, where air is drawn through the carpet edge. It is called filtration soil and it is not a spill, so treating it like one gets nowhere.
It is worth mentioning when you call, because it is slow detailed work at the edges of a room rather than something that comes out with the general clean.
What cleaning will not fix
In houses this age some carpet has simply run out of life, and you should hear that before you spend rather than after.
Fibre that grit has already cut comes back clean, not new. Where a previous cleaning left detergent behind, the carpet re-soils fast and may need more than one visit to strip properly. And old pet damage that has gone through to the boards is a subfloor conversation, not a carpet one.

Common questions
How quickly can you get to Nevada City?
It is about four miles from Grass Valley, so Nevada City is a normal day for us rather than a trip. Usually a few days to a week, and longer approaching the holidays. If you are working to a listing date or a move-out, say so when you call and we will work around it.
My carpet is wool. Is that a problem?
No, but it does change the method. Wool is more sensitive to heat and to the wrong chemistry than the nylon in a newer house, and it is far more common in Nevada City because of the age of the housing. Say so when you call and we will come prepared for it rather than discover it on the day.
How often should carpet be cleaned?
Manufacturers generally ask for professional cleaning every twelve months, and heavy traffic areas need it sooner. The real signal is not the calendar: once you can see the traffic lane, the grit has been cutting the fibre for a while already, and some of that wear does not come back.
Do you move the furniture?
We move what can reasonably be moved: sofas, chairs, coffee tables. We ask you to clear the small things beforehand — lamps, electronics, cables, anything breakable on a low shelf. Very heavy or fragile pieces, and beds with storage underneath, we clean around rather than risk.
How long does it take to dry?
Most carpet is dry enough to walk on in a few hours and fully dry within about a day. A damp winter week is slower. Airflow matters more than heat, so leaving the furnace on and cracking a couple of windows does more than turning the thermostat up.
